Advances in Seasonal Predictions of Arctic Sea Ice With NOAA UFS

چکیده
Abstract The Unified Forecast System (UFS) is the next generation modeling infrastructure under development for NOAA's operational numerical weather/climate predictions. This study first attempt with UFS seasonal predictions application. In particular, 9‐month hindcasts are performed starting from every month during 2007–2020. performance in predicting Arctic sea ice was compared to by (a) current Climate version 2 (CFSv2) and (b) an experimental prediction system (CFSm5) at NOAA. Evaluations indicate that demonstrates consistently improved skills than both CFSv2 CFSm5 predictions, together more realistic climatological distributions. Diagnostics suggest better distributions related its atmospheric states simulated FV3, component of UFS, reinforced associated ocean circulations. addition, applications multi‐model ensemble strategy do not present skill improvements over forecasts alone.

Albedo evolution of seasonal Arctic sea ice
[1] There is an ongoing shift in the Arctic sea ice cover from multiyear ice to seasonal ice. Here we examine the impact of this shift on sea ice albedo. Our analysis of observations from four years of field experiments indicates that seasonal ice undergoes an albedo evolution with seven phases; cold snow, melting snow, pond formation, pond drainage, pond evolution, open water, and freezeup. On...
متن کاملSeasonal predictions of ice extent in the Arctic Ocean
[1] How well can the extent of arctic sea ice be predicted for lead periods of up to one year? The forecast ability of a linear empirical model is explored. It uses as predictors historical information about the ocean and ice obtained from an ice–ocean model retrospective analysis. The monthly model fields are represented by a correlation-weighted average based on the predicted ice extent. The ...
متن کاملDecadal to seasonal variability of Arctic sea ice albedo
[1] A controlling factor in the seasonal and climatological evolution of the sea ice cover is its albedo a. Here we analyze Arctic data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Polar Pathfinder and assess the seasonality and variability of broadband albedo from a 23 year daily record. We produce a histogram of daily albedo over ice covered regions in which the principal albedo ...
متن کاملConsistent and contrasting decadal Arctic sea ice thickness predictions from a highly optimized sea ice model
[1] Decadal hindcast simulations of Arctic Ocean sea ice thickness made by a modern dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model and forced independently by both the ERA-40 and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data sets are compared for the first time. Using comprehensive data sets of observations made between 1979 and 2001 of sea ice thickness, draft, extent, and speeds, we find that it is possible to tune model p...
متن کاملSeasonal forecasts of Arctic sea ice initialized with observations of ice thickness
[1] Seasonal forecasts of the September 2012 Arctic sea ice thickness and extent are conducted starting from 1 June 2012. An ensemble of forecasts is made with a coupled ice-ocean model. For the first time, observations of the ice thickness are used to correct the initial ice thickness distribution to improve the initial conditions. Data from two airborne campaigns are used: NASA Operation IceB...
